Books

Here is an unranked list of books that you may find useful.

  1. "Mastering Pool" by George Fels.   ISBN: 0-8092-7895-2 (pbk).   A touch more than half the book is devoted to straight pool.   His Whenever Possible guidelines are well worth understanding.   "A", "B", "C", and "D" balls are explained.   Working through the runs he shows (using photos of the balls' table position) is likewise well worth the effort.

  2. "Advanced Pool" by George Fels.   ISBN: 0-8092-3321-5 (pbk).   More than three-quarters of the book is devoted to straight pool.   The Whenever Possible guidelines are presented again.   The coverage of "A", "B", "C", and "D" balls is most useful.

  3. "The Straight Pool Bible" by Arthur "Babe" Cranfield and Laurence S. Moy.   Babe shares the knowledge and insights he has picked up from a lifetime of playing straight pool.

  4. "Play Your Best Straight Pool" by Phil Capelle.   Provides thorough coverage and instruction on straight pool.

  5. "Break Shot Patterns" by Phil Capelle.   Reviews actual continuation shots from tournament games.   It's a spiral bound book suitable for use while practicing.

  6. "A Shortstop on Straight Pool" by Bob Keller and David Sheesley.   A book and video guide (via a USB stick) for players who want to take their game to the next level.   It's not geared to beginning players, e.g. it doesn't cover how to hold a stick, or how to aim a shot.   It's a spiral bound book suitable for use while practicing.   More information can be found at www.shortstoponpool.com.
