CAROM / SNOOKER / STRAIGHT
- Best Player -
TOURNAMENT

2014 March 28, 29, and 30 (and if needed April 4, 5, and 6).
** PLAQUE EVENT **

Sponsored by
N.M.I.M.T.
Billy Aardd's Club,
and the Game Room.

The tournament will be one, un-handicapped, division only.   The Tournament Rules and Regulations, the General Rules of Pocket Billiards, the General Rules of Carom Billiards, and the rules on:

will apply to this tournament.

This tournament is open to Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni of New Mexico Tech.

The intent of this tournament is to give the better players a chance for some intense competition and to come out and show us what they can do.   Courteous spectators are encouraged to come enjoy the event (and by their presence perhaps add a bit more pressure to the competition).   See the Player list to see who is signed up.

This is a Plaque Event.   The 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place finishers will have their names placed on a plaque which is to remain in the game room (or wherever the pool tables reside) until such time as it gets lost.   There must be at least five contestants ready to play at the start of this tournament for it to be run.

Any number of people may sign up for the tournament but the field will be limited to the best sixteen entrants (rankings will be determined by the tournament director).   This restriction is unfortunately due to time and table constraints.   If more than sixteen people sign up for the tournament those after the sixteenth seed will be considered as alternates.   The top players will be seeded first; alternates will be offered entry (based on their ranking and not necessarily in the order of sign-up), as needed, when a starter doesn't show for their first match.

The sign-up sheet is at the attendant's counter in the SUB game room.   Out of town entries can be made by contacting the tournament director (email, with appropriate subject line, preferred).   The entry deadline is Friday, 4 April, at 5:30pm.   The tournament bracket and time-line will be posted Tuesday at 6:30pm.   Play will start at 1:00pm on Friday, 11 April.   Players from out of town will be scheduled on Saturday when possible, or as late on Friday as possible.

There is no entry fee even though there will be prizes.   Donations to the Billy Aardd's Club prize fund are welcome though.   Donations will cover the cost of this tournament, and the plaque, with any remainder going towards the cost of future tournaments.   Prize money for this tournament will break-down as follows:

Players will be seeded by their known ability.   Failing that they will be placed in the remaining slots by random draw.

The format of this tournament will depend on the number of entrants.   As this tournament is also know as the "Best Player" tournament there will only be one division and play will not be handicapped.

The format will be Round Robin when possible.

Play will be on a match basis.   Each match will consist of the best 2 of 3 sets.   The sets are estimated to take 45-minutes each.   There will be a 10-minute break between sets.   Note that a match could consume 2 to 3 hours with break times (assuming no extended sets).   There will not be a time limit on any set, though a shot-clock may be imposed (to sets as needed) to keep things moving.

FIRST SET -- 18.2 BALKLINE

The first set will be one game of 18.2 Balkline Billiards played to 65-points, or a maximum of thirty-five innings.   Play will be equal innings.

SECOND SET -- SNOOKER

The second set will be one game of American Snooker, limited to forty innings.   Situation permitting, play will be equal innings.

THIRD SET (tie breaker only) -- 14.1 CONTINUOUS

A game of 14.1 Continuous to 75-points will be played as the third, and tie breaking, set if the match is tied after the first two sets.

TOURNAMENT RULES

Participants are responsible for knowing the rules of the games being played, the general rules for both carom billiards and pocket billiards, and the rules and regulations governing tournamet play.   The player chair rule will be enforced.   On refereed matches the referee will be the only person allowed to handle the balls.

Since this tournament is pressed for time the call for starting matches will take precedence over any posted times for matches.   The times posted for matches is only an approximation.   It is strongly recommended that players show up at least an hour before any posted time and check with the tournament director before leaving for more than a few minutes.

Forfeits due to late-shows or no-shows will be in force.   All grace times for forfeitures are relative to the call for starting the match (CSM).   A forfeit of the first set will be declared if a player is not ready to play by 15-minutes past CSM.   A forfeit of the second set will be declared if a player is not ready by 30-minutes past CSM.   The third set will be forfeit if a player is not ready to play by 45-minutes past CSM.

Choice of break for each set will be established by lag.

Here are the BRACKETs and SCHEDULES for match times.

Additional details about these tournaments may be found at the Tournament Board in the SUB Gameroom.   If you have questions about the tournaments you can ask our Tournament Director (TD), Ray Piworunas.
