Straight Pool League in Rio Rancho, NM
Handicapped 14.1 Tournament
September 21 & 22, 2019.

Overview of process.

The format of the tournament is a seeded (based on win-loss record) Round Robin (on Saturday) feeding into a seeded (based on tournament BPI relative to Career LBPI) Single Elimination bracket (on Sunday).

Some reminders are in order before the tournament begins (some may need to be repeated as it's going along too).

The list of players shows not only who is planning to play in the tournament but also provides information for seeding the Round Robin portion of the tournament.   It also shows Career LBPIs for figuring starting scores of each match.

It is most likely that the list of people actually in the tournament will be different than that in the list of players mentioned above.   To allow for adjustments please see the RR Seeding Charts below.

The Round Robin Summary chart is used to track the results of each player's games.   Primary purpose is to determine which players advance to the Single Elimination portion of the tournament, and the seeding of the SE bracket.   Secondary use is for figuring payouts related to prize categories other than final placing in the tournament (e.g. Highest Run over 25 balls, and best T/C for those not placing First, Second, or Third).   It's best to update this chart as soon as player's bring in the score sheets for their match, as that will reduce the madness of the rush when people want know how the SE portion will shake out (it's just easier to do as the sheets come in rather than to wade through a stack of them).

List of players (not trimmed yet — includes all possibles for now).
Underlined players are intending to play tournament
.

To be consistent with the example tables following this list of players the RR group assignments are based on
there being five groups (A-E).

NOTE:
The RR Flight assignments shown here will most likely need to change as the list of players changes.   See the RR Seeding Charts below to double check (and adjust as needed) player assignments to the different RR groups.

RR Seeding Charts for Various Numbers of Players

Letters will be used to show which flight a player is in.   The associated number is the player's rank (based on their Win/Loss percentage — a tie there would be broke using LBPI).

Special 8 Player Case

Here is an arrangement for eight players which guarantees a minimum of 3 matches and uses just one more match than a Double Elimination.   It uses two 4-player Round Robin groups to feed into a 4-player Single Elimination bracket.

     -- 8 Players --
    Two 4-player Groups
    (2 tables / group)
   =====================
     A  ::  1  4  6  8        The top two players of each
     B  ::  2  3  5  7        RR Flight will advance.  *

     -- 4 Player SE --
    ====================

     -- #1 ---+
             I > ----+
     -- #4 ---+      |
                   IV > ------.  (First)
     -- #3 ---+      |
            II > ----+
     -- #2 ---+
                  Looser of IV is (Second)

     -- L I ---+
            III > ------.  (Third)
     -- L II --+

Round Robins with More Than 8 Players

The charts below lean towards 3 player RRs.
Note that a 3 player RR uses 3 matches, while a 4 player RR needs 6 matches.

RR — Player Summary (set up for 15 player example)
is the heart of setting up the Single Elimination
(Sunday) part of the tournament
.

Filling in the Round Robin — Player Summary table each time a match is finished will help tremendously when it comes time to seed the Single Elimination Bracket for Sunday.   That will also make it easier for people to predict who is likely to play in the SE when all the RR matches aren't played yet.

Number of matches won will determine a player's rank in their Flight.   If there is a tie in that then the tie breakers will be:

  1. Head to head play.
  2. Tournament BPI relative to Career BPI.
  3. Flipping of coin(s).   (e.g. Least number of a side OUT in a flip by more than 2 players when looking for 1st and 2nd places.)

For the 15-player example being used here — The top player from each Round Robin (RR) group will advance to an eight-player Single Elimination bracket.   The top three (based on T/C) of the remaining players (doesn't matter what RR group they were in) will also advance to the SE bracket.

If a 9-player RR were being run (three groups of 3) then the top two players of each Round Robin (RR) group would advance to a six-player Single Elimination bracket.

The SE bracket will be seeded using a player's T/C number (their BPI performance this tournament normalized to their Career LBPI).

RR — Match Schedule (set up for 15 player example)
keeps track of who is playing who and where
.

Note that posted match start times will rarely be precise.   To help the tournament run smoothly please be ready to play at least 15-minutes before the time shown for your match.   If no time is shown (most likely to happen for all but the first match in a RR flight) please be in ear-shout for when your match is called.

The playing order within a group will be determined as follows.   There are three possible choices for a 3-player group:

  1. Play, Play, Sit.
  2. Play, Sit, Play.
  3. Sit, Play, Play.
The top ranked player of a group will choose their playing order first.   The second ranked player will choose second.   The third ranked player has what is left.   Choosing player order for a 4-player group is much the same.   NOTE: the Sit slots above may turn out to be score keep slots if a knowledgeable volunteer is not available.
